*DISCLOSURE For some reason Blogger will not permit me to make this font larger. Sorry*After working on my essay about the 19th century Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron I fell in love with her artwork May Day. Delving into her biography gave me an appreciation for her artistic process, and I love the way that she creates stories in her images.
There is a diverse range of values from dark darks to light lights which form contrast. This contrast accentuates all the lines and movement in the photo. The exposure seems to be balanced, as well. The attention to detail adds to the story, from the lush flower bouquets to the trailing ribbons and romantic dress. These elements work together to create an ethereal and serene image. I'm really interested in folklore art, and this looks as if it's part of a fairy tale. The subject matter is centrally balanced.
What really drew me to this photograph was the central woman. She demands your attention as she is the only figure that is looking into the viewer's eyes. The lighting is also focused on her face. All of these factors combine to help form the focal point where the woman's face is. I'm also envious of her locks.
